News bites. Happy Thanksgiving!
Not even one minute read
I’m going to keep it super short so you can get back to your Thanksgiving prep. I am thankful for all of you readers!
In the news this week is Eat Just, the company formerly known as Hampton Creek, in the hot seat again.
After receiving an additional $16m a few months ago, the company can’t pay its bills. If you haven’t read Chloe Sorvino’s book that came out this year, think about gifting it to yourself for the holidays. The part that talks about over hyped brands includes the history of founder Josh Tetrick’s rise, fall, and then rise again to Eat Just. Check it out.
Although the main topic is about industrialized meat, I appreciate Chloe’s perspective on the protein trend, and how the rise of alternative proteins is shaping the culture, investment, and future of food.
In other news, almonds are trying to dig their way out of an unprecedented oversupply of ~ 800m lbs carried over into this year (that’s a lot). Blue Diamond Growers, the largest almond co-op, reported $17m decline in annual sales. Last week, a new plan was announced in their annual meeting. It involves shifting strategy towards foodservice (think barista almond milk) and taking their brands, which include Almond Breeze, international. Let’s hope they win.
More to come next week.
All my best,
Jennifer
